About Samantha

I am a solution Focused Hypnotherapist and Psychotherapist based in the vibrant Ocean City of Plymouth. I am married, have three children and a dog. I studied Psychology, Criminology and Criminal Justice Studies at the University of Plymouth where I achieved my degree BSc (Hons). I continued my studies at the renowned Clifton Practice, which is one of the leading schools of hypnotherapy in the United Kingdom. I have attained my Diploma in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (DSFH), and the Hypnotherapy Practitioners Diploma (HPD) qualification.


I decided to make a career in hypnotherapy to help people of all ages who are struggling with life. Coming from a background of service and medical personnel I was getting increasingly concerned about the lack of help for our service and medical workforce. The waiting list on our wonderful NHS is extremely lengthy and using the private sector can be expensive. Thus I made the decision to use my knowledge of psychology to train and become a Hypnotherapist and Psychotherapist. I offer a discounted price for those who work in our uniformed services or NHS*. I am a member of the British Psychology Society (BPS) and the Association for Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (AfSFH). I am fully insured.

What is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy?


Solution Focused Hypnotherapy uses well researched strategies to help people make significant, positive changes in their lives within a relatively short period of time.


As the name suggests Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a type of treatment that looks for solutions to the crisis rather than the problem; we do not examine the past. My aim is to alter the way we think, by changing our thought patterns and behaviours to new, healthy and positive ones. The way we accomplish this is through natural trance. We go into go into natural trance around every seven minutes. For example, when you walk or drive somewhere and you suddenly become aware that you cannot remember getting to your destination. You may think your brain has switched off, however, this far from the truth. Your subconscious mind will be retaining a huge amount of information and processing it adequately. When you are in a natural trance I can access your subconscious mind and give you positive subliminal suggestions. It will help you change the way you think, feel and give you the tools to help you achieve all the goals that you thought were never attainable.


Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a non-evasive, gentle safe and a very relaxed effective mix of psychotherapy and hypnosis, where you are always in control. It is not like you see on television. You are free to move and talk if you wish, although the majority of clients take this time to relax, as this is their time where they have no worries, anxieties, stresses or anger, nothing at all to preoccupy their mind.


Anger

Anger and Anxiety is our natural self-defence response to any situation that we may perceive as dangerous or threatening to a situation. Anger is the ‘fight’ option of the fight or flight response. As a human beings we devised anger` to be used to fight in certain circumstances, for example to defend our families or ourselves. When we become angry, our body produces adrenaline and other stress hormones, which causes our upper body (especially the arms) to become flushed with blood to provide extra strength so we can fight. This is why people often go red in the face or neck when angry.


When we experience anger it tends to be explosive outburst of rage and you lose all intellectual control, and start to think irrationally. Anger can also manifest itself as annoyance, lack of patience, frustration or irritation. When we get angry we think things that “should” be different, i.e. they should indicate when driving or s/he should help with the house work, when our expectations are not met or you perceive that “its not fair” thus we get angry.

Anxiety

Anxiety and anger is our natural self-defence response to any situation that we may perceive as dangerous or threatening to a situation. Anxiety is the ‘flight’ option of the fight or flight response. When we were primitive man/women we had to flee from hazardous situations for example dangerous animals or fires. When we are anxious our mind thinks there is danger all around thus it will be constantly on red alert. This response would have been brilliant at primitive era although not so good in modern times.


What we perceive as dangerous in modern day times would be money worries, exams or social events etc. We create anxiety through negative thinking; our primitive mind identifies modern day worries as dangerous thus encouraging us to flee or keep away.


When we are anxious we have an overflow of stress hormones. When we were early man/women we ran away, fled from the dangerous situation, creating an overflow of our stress hormones; we burnt off these powerful chemicals. Unfortunately in modern times when we become anxious we do not tend to physically burn off the chemicals, which results of the overflow of our stress hormones floating around our body.

Pregnancy and childbirth can be a very scary and daunting event in ones life, not only for the expecting mum but also the expectant dad. Hypnotherapy can give you techniques to ensure mum and dad has a calm, relaxed, confident pregnancy and birth.

Chronic Pain

When you have chronic pain you would have suffered for a number of months or even years of pain and discomfort. It can be a continuous or episodic pain, mild or excruciating, it can differ from person to person. Chronic pain is caused by an injury or an ongoing health problem, whereas acute pain signals an immediate injury or a immediate problem. Acute pain will subside once the injury or problem has been treated or dealt with. Chronic pain can be debilitating and restricting on your life, sometimes the reason for the pain is unknown.


When we suffer from pain our body responds the same way as it does to stress. Our muscles retract, our blood pressure rises and heart rate increases. We are usually constantly tensing the part of the body that is injured, ready to take another impact, protecting one self. This reaction is great if we broke a bone but not helpful when we have chronic pain.


When we are in constant pain it can have an affect on us emotionally, and cause us to be depressed or stressed. Hypnotherapy is a very helpful tool to manage and cope with pain; in some circumstance practitioners have used it as a natural anaesthetic when having dental work or even surgery. Depression

Depression is a response when we feel anxious or stressed. The symptoms are usually tiredness, lethargic, lack of motivation, sadness, lack of appetite, over eating and a general a lack of interest to interact with the world.


Depression is simply our primitive opt out clause. In primitive times caveman/women would opt out of the world if they couldn’t go out to hunt and gather due potential dangers around. They were inclined to stay in their cave where they were safe until the situation change. We have adapted this to modern day, when life becomes too stressful we want hide until the situation has changed.

Fear & Phobias

We have all experienced some sort of fear; it could be from watching a horror movie to hearing a sudden noise. It is our natural defence mechanism to protect ourselves from danger. When our brain thinks we are in jeopardy our fear will kick in, which will trigger our flight and fight response. If we are not in any danger our intellectual mind can switch off the fear response, it will rationalise the situation and come to the conclusion that the scary movie is just that a fictional scary movie, and the loud noise is just a door slamming.


However, our mind can create irrational fears for example enclosed spaces or cotton wool. We know these things will not hurt or destroy us, but in our primitive mind we cannot switch off the fear, this turns into a phobia.


Fear

Fear is an inbuilt natural defence mechanism. It is our primitive brain switching on our fight flight response, thus we flee to keep ourselves safe. For example if you bumped into a crocodile in the street your hands would sweat, your heart rate would increase and you would be off like a shot, thus protecting your survival. You would have a similar reaction if you came face to face with a crocodile in a wildlife park. However, your intellectual brain would rationalise the situation and it would conclude you are safe. The crocodile is behind glass and cannot hurt or mane you, your fear response is cancelled and you can continue to enjoy your day.


When we were cavemen/women we would steer clear of tigers, crocodiles or other any other carnivores, as this would prevent anything hazardous happening to us. In modern days we still need to have this fear response, it prevents us walking down a dark ally on our own. It makes sense to avoid dangerous situations and these fears are rational. However, not all fears are obvious, we can experience fear in day to day life activities. For example, public speaking or exams. We know intellectually that these events are not dangerous, however, at some point in our life we have learnt to be scared of these situations.


Fears are conditioned, for example if we had a bad experience through public speaking like being humiliated or forgetting what we had to say, these feelings became negative. Our primitive brain takes over and stores the negative feelings and thinks public speaking is a threat. Our heart rate would race, we would sweat and our anxieties would go up, we would be encouraged to run away or avoid the situation at all cost. The more we steer clear of the situation we reinforce the fear response, thus caught in a vicious circle.


Irrational fear can affect our lives enormously and prevent us from carrying out normal activities. Hypnotherapy can help relax our primitive brain and allow our intellectual part of the brain assess our fear rationally. Our fear starts to melt away and we can live our lives to the full, moving forward and achieve our goals.


Phobia

Phobias are a strong obsessive fear of an object, situation or living creature. A phobic response is usually irrational and you feel you have no control of it. The majority of people cannot pinpoint the time they became phobic of something. The response is usually the same, disgust, mild anxiety to full-blown panic attacks.


Phobic response are extremely common, they vary from spiders, heights, flying to vomiting, and much more. They are created when our primitive mind attaches a danger response to something. Sometimes they are illogical for example having a phobia of cotton wool. When we are stressed or anxious we cannot ignore our danger signals in our intellectual brain. The fear or phobia is stored in our primitive brain, so when we come across the object or situation the feelings come flooding back and triggers our flight or fight response. Our primitive mind goes into survival mode, to help us survive. Although sometimes it can get it wrong.

Habits (nail biting Trichotillomania)

Habits are usually formed when we are stressed or anxious, we do not always know why we started the habit, however, at some point in our life the we think this habit has helped us overcome our anxious time. Having a physical habit can affect our lives a great deal, not only on our appearance but also on our health. For example nail biting may cause you to hide your hands due to embarrassment, it can also affect our health as our fingers carry millions of germs.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disorder that affects our digestive system. It impinges on one in five people in the United Kingdom; symptoms usually include bloating, stomach cramps, constipation, diarrhoea, acid reflux and digestive problems. A contributing factor to IBS is stress. When we are stressed we have an overflow of stress hormones, adrenalines and cortisol that triggers our primitive fight or fight response. As we do not usually need to flee or fight in modern times, the overflow of chemicals are left to float around our body taking its toll on our physical and mental health.


When we are stressed or anxious our digestive system is usually the first thing affected. Our primitive brain takes over and put us into survival mode. It directs all energies away from our digestive system and moves them to our muscles (ready to flee). This causes the food that we have eaten and not yet digested appropriately and causes bloating, cramps etc.

OCD & Obsessional Thoughts

Obsessional thoughts are usually linked to stress, anxieties and depression. If our primitive brain feels that we are in danger for any apparent reason it will naturally bring our attention back to what it perceived as the problem. For example, if we were anxious about a bill we would constantly keep thinking about it. Worry is a form of obsessional thinking. The negative feelings we worry about keep going around in our head, which can affect our work and day to day life.


Obsessional thoughts can be converted into Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). This condition is when you have an overbearing compulsion to carry out certain ritual or acts, these are often repeated several time to feel safe. These routines are often rechecking things such as locks, light switches and electrical sockets. You may not throw items away, constantly wash your hands or only have even numbers on the volume of the television. You think that if these acts are not carried out something terrible may happen to you or loved ones. OCD can have a detrimental affect on your life; it can prevent you living a “normal healthy” life.

Panic Attacks

Panic attacks can be a very frightening experience. Symptoms usually include racing heart, rapid breathing, sweaty, nausea, chest pains and dizziness. It can easily be confused with a heart attack. Panic attacks occur when our body goes into flight or flight mode; we become flooded with stress hormones, adrenalines and cortisol to help us flee from the perceived situation. They can be triggered by a traumatic event or stress. Due to the unpleasantness of the attacks you tend to become anxious and stressed about the next attack thus you become more worried, which could bring a further attack.


Panic attacks can have a detrimental affect on your life. It can prevent you from carrying out day-to-day activities because of the fear of having an attack. You may avoid public transport, driving, tunnels or large social occasions.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is very debilitating condition where you are constantly remembering a traumatic event; this can be through flash backs, nightmares or even sounds. Your sleep pattern can be significantly affected; you may also be suffering from depression, anxiety, panic attacks, phobic responses, OCD and any number of other anxiety related conditions.


When you suffer from PTSD you are working from the primitive part of the brain. You are reliving the event causing a huge amount of stress and anxieties; your intellectual brain cannot process the information and files the memory as closed and finished.

Sexual Problems

When we are stressed your primitive mind thinks we are in danger in some form or another. Your body goes into fight, flight function, and this can suppress other bodily functions. These can be the digestive system, immune system and reproductive system. When we are stressed or anxious our primitive, survival part of your brain feels it is not safe to reproduce, therefore the bodily function for sexual activity is compromised, we can lose our sex drive and enjoyment. Symptoms are commonly seen as inhibited sexual desire, erectile dysfunction, inability to become aroused, premature ejaculation, and lack of orgasm.

Skin Conditions

The skin is the largest organ in our body. It contains nerves, sweat glands, hair follicles, oil glands and blood vessels. It regulates our temperature, plays a key role in immunity, synthesises vitamin D, and forms a protective barrier for our bones, muscles and tissues. It also allows us to touch and feel, and interact physically with our environment. When we are stressed or anxious it can have a huge affect on our skin.


When we have skin problems such as acne, eczema or psoriasis we can have a huge amount of stress and anxieties due to lack of confidence and self-esteem. We sometimes believe people are constantly staring as us and this could make us think negatively, which is converted to stress and anxieties. Sleep Problems

When we are stressed, anxious or depressed sleep is one of the first things to be affected. We tend to lie awake replaying issues over and over in our head, causing your mind to race, and you are unable to switch off. When we are stressed we wake up during the night, it is not like being woken by a babies cry or someone using the bathroom. When we wake we are groggy and can not get back to sleep, this is due to having either too little or too much rapid eye movement (REM) sleep.

Tinnitus

Tinnitus is condition associated with loud ringing, pulsing, humming or buzzing in your ears. The noise is not external and can only be heard by the sufferer. It can cause you to be hypersensitive to any other sounds. It can be caused by being constantly surround by noise, for example a service person using a rifle or a DJ, however, in some cases there is no underlying cause.

Weight Loss

When we feel that we are over weight or would like to lose weight we struggle to make the right choices and healthy alternatives. Overeating is linked to anxiety, depression, confidence and low self esteem; when we feel like this we tend to comfort eat as it gives us a small buzz of excitement. We are working in our primitive brain. When we were caveman/women we hunted, gathered and ate, it made us feel good. However, back in those times food could sometimes be sparse, so they override their feeling full mechanism and was able to over eat, because sometimes they did not know when their next meal was coming. However, we have adapted this to modern times; no longer is food hard to find, it is ready an available, however, we can still override our full mechanism and over eat.
